German Chancellor Welcomes Hungarian Election Result

(MENAFN) German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has described the outcome of Hungary’s recent parliamentary election as a significant setback for right-wing populist politics, following the defeat of long-time Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

Speaking at a press briefing in Berlin, Merz congratulated opposition leader Peter Magyar after his Tisza Party achieved a decisive victory in Sunday’s vote, securing a two-thirds majority and bringing an end to Orban’s 16 years in office.

He framed the election result as a reflection of the strength of democratic systems in resisting outside influence and disinformation efforts, including alleged interference attempts from external actors.

“This shows that our democratic societies are clearly much more resilient against Russian propaganda and other foreign interference attempts in such elections,” Merz said, referring to geopolitical influences and foreign political backing linked to Moscow as well as the Trump administration.

He added that the outcome represented one of the most positive developments of the previous day and praised what he described as the strong resilience of democratic governance in Hungary.

“Right-wing populism suffered a heavy defeat in Hungary yesterday,” Germany’s conservative leader said. “And this doesn’t just affect Hungary. Hungary is sending a very clear signal against right-wing populism worldwide. In that respect, yesterday was a good day.”

Merz also expressed optimism that the change in government in Budapest could improve coordination within the European Union, noting that previous vetoes from the Hungarian leadership had often complicated joint EU decisions, particularly regarding military assistance to Ukraine and sanctions policy toward Russia.
