Most Germans Oppose Welfare for Unemployed Ukrainians
The study, released on Saturday, exposed widespread discontent with government policies regarding Ukrainian migrants.
Only 17% of those surveyed believe that Ukrainians who fled to Germany following the intensification of the conflict with Russia should qualify for payments under the ‘Burgergeld’ scheme (citizens’ income). In contrast, 66% are against the proposal.
The newspaper reports that Germany allocates approximately €6.3 billion ($6.8 billion) each year to Burgergeld for about 700,000 Ukrainians.
The newspaper also highlights that just one-third of Ukrainians residing in Germany are employed, noting that many who arrived since 2022 have yet to integrate into the labor market.
Burgergeld serves as Germany’s primary welfare program, offering financial aid to adults unable to support themselves through employment or insurance-based initiatives.
Typically viewed as a last-resort safety net, it provides around €563 ($610) per month for a single adult, with additional coverage for rent and utilities.
The INSA survey further indicated that 62% of Germans think able-bodied Ukrainian men who came to Germany after the conflict escalated should return to their home country, while 18% disagree.
Ukrainian authorities have encouraged these men to go back and participate in the fight, but EU countries, including Germany, have declined to deport them.
